We’ve all heard of something called “writer’s block,” but not everyone is aware that designers across the globe face a little something called “designer’s block.” Sometimes, we just need a little inspiration to get us going again.

One of my favorite design blogs is Just Creative Design.

site

I often find myself visiting it when I am having “designer’s block.” This site is FILLED with resources that can inspire designers working in both b2c and b2b industries. It provides lists of 101+ Places to Get Design Inspiration and 99 Sites All Designers Must Know About. I keep it bookmarked in my browser at all times. Check it out and tell me what you think.

What inspires you?

(That’s caveman for Happy Halloween!)

Today, Canyon’s Halloween celebration took us back in time to an era when things were a lot less complicated. When the latest must-have gadget was the wheel (not the iPhone) and when raw food was necessary for survival (rather than something we get at a sushi restaurant).

This year we all dressed as cave people or prehistoric figures, and while we did see our fair share of pelts and animal prints―you’d be surprised at some of the creative costumes the Canyon team sported. Here are some of the highlights:

  1. Adam: T-Rex hatching from its egg
  2. Kristina: Prehistoric tree hugger
  3. Emily: The near-extinct daily newspaper
  4. Sabrina: Coprolite (fossilized dinosaur poop)
  5. Jacque: A cockroach (they’ve been around for about 300 million years, you know)

We had a great lunch of buffalo burgers, pterodactyl (deviled) eggs, molten-lava cheese dip, dirt pudding and fossil fudge. We also participated in a caveman triathlon (pin the tail on the mammoth, name that grunt and spear hunting (darts)). The final event of the day was scavenger hunt (and gather).

Thanks to this month’s Canyon Culture Club team for planning such a memorable ex-spear-ience!

In this day and age, the new waves of next generation user interfaces (UI) are popping up left and right. From a graphic designer’s perspective, I’m always intrigued by the possibility of something that will make my work flow easier and more efficient.

This video goes over some new ideas to solve UI issues that have come up in recent years.

10/GUI from C. Miller on Vimeo.

Usually, the systems that this new type of UI could work great for would be similar to ordering drinks at a restaurant. The problem from a graphic design perspective is; “how would this work in Photoshop for 8 hours?”

The main problem with envisioning the potential success of a new interface like this is that the current software we all use was created for the mouse. If the applications I use were rewritten with an interface like this in mind, who knows how powerful it might be. With thinking like this, I can see B2B marketing reaching new levels. This video is definitely worth the watch, perhaps a glimpse of what’s to come.

What do you think? Will we ever see these new interfaces worked into our everyday lives?

At last we’ve found it, advertising at its lowest point. Flush all those ideas of social media or mobile devices being the future of advertising, the WOW Toilet Tank is sure to be the #1 (or #2) way to reach your target market! We ran across this website here in the office and couldn’t help but share it. It’s a transparent toilet tank for inserting posters and advertisements.

The question is: Will it really help sales skyrocket or make them tank?

wowtoilet

Although we’re used to people “crapping” all over our new marketing ideas, this one wipes all those away. We thought it would be fun to give it a try. So here’s our challenge: anybody who would like to step up (or sit down) to this new advertising idea, we’d be glad to assist. I do have a disclaimer though…I don’t want to be the one to change out the posters in the tanks!

Now I’m off to wash my hands.

Dear Twitter,

Where do I begin? Life is so different since you came into the world.

I can now interface with brands and get immediate responses to my questions, comments and complaints. I can vent about annoyances and find others who share the same pet peeves. I can tell the world about the awesome service I received, the smokin’ deal I found at a shoe store or a fascinating article I read online.

And, as a B2B marketer, I can listen to and participate in conversations that are relevant to my clients’ industries and use the information to enhance their strategic marketing campaigns.

But Twitter, why haven’t YOU changed? Why are you still asking the same stale question that causes many to mock you? “What are you doing?” does not do justice to the wonderful information you can provide.

twitter (2)

“What are you doing?” can lead to Tweets about what people have eaten for lunch and potentially even more mundane information about their day.

It’s time for a change, Twitter. How about asking something more thought provoking? I’ve prepared a list of suggestions for you to consider:

“What’s on your mind?”

“What’s new?”

“What do you think?”

Thanks for listening; I’ll talk to you soon!

xoxoxo
