Before you name your business and choose your domain name, you might want to consider the following tips:
1. Unique
Check out your competitors’ websites to make sure that your domain name stands out. If you are having a hard time coming up with a memorable name, use generators such as NameStation, NameBoy or DomainSamurai to get started.
2. Make it short
Domain names can be up to 67 characters, but it is recommended to stick to 10 characters or less. The shorter your domain name is, the easier it will be for your visitors to remember.
3. Easy to spell/pronounce
When someone hears your domain name for the first time, they should be able to understand what your website is all about. Avoid complicated abbreviations, stay away from using slang, hyphens and numeral substitutions.
4. Use .com
Select a .com name, if possible, because it signifies a top-level domain address. And, .com is by far the most widely accepted extension for a domain name.
5. Copyright
Do not purchase domain names that could possibly be infringing on an existing copyright. When in doubt, visit the U.S. Copyright Office to find out more.
Millions of people use Google everyday to look for a product, service or information. I guarantee that a substantial amount of these people are potential clients looking for your particular service or product. Below are eight ways I’ve found that can help increase your Google page rank.
1. Know Your Current Page Rank: The first step to increase your Google ranking is to know your current Page Rank. Visit PR Checker to find out.
2. Submit Your Site: You want the search engine spiders to come to your site and start indexing it into their database.
3. Quality Page Content: Make sure to update your website or blog regularly. Good content will increase your ranking. It’s that simple. More good, relevant content means more visitors. This eventually leads to other sites linking to your pages.
4. Link Often: Google looks at both inbound and outbound links. One of the easiest ways to increase your Page Rank is to exchange links with other websites or blogs that have similar content.
5. Social Networking: Submit your website or blog posts to popular sites like StumbleUpon, Digg, Delicious, Facebook and Twitter. These sites will help you generate backlinks.
6. Make Your Graphics Search Friendly: Keep Flash to a minimum. People may enjoy reading Flash, but search engines tend to skip over it.
7. Clean-coded Site: Make sure that your website’s coding is clean and simple so it’s easy for web crawlers to crawl the content.
8. Use Meta Tags: Include Meta keywords, Meta descriptions and page titles on every page.
Mobile advertising is emerging as an integral part of any marketing campaign these days. While mobile advertising is still in development, ABI Research forecasts that in the next five years, spending on mobile ads in the United States will nearly quadruple—to exceed $1.2 billion in 2015.
This month, Apple’s long-awaited iAd launched. And, one of the first companies to take advantage of nearly everything iAds and the iPhone has to offer, was Nissan. Nissan’s truly impressive interactive advertisement is engaging and lives directly inside the app. The Nissan Leaf iAd allows users to customize their car and learn about key features, including comparative miles per dollar.
So, where is the future of mobile advertising heading this year? It seems that not all advertisers and agencies have embraced mobile advertising and, instead, tend to stick with more traditional advertising methods such as TV and print ads. But with more and more users purchasing smart phones and using mobile internet, maybe 2010 will be the year that advertisers start seeing mobile ads as less of a risk and more as a chance to reach 45 million U.S. smart phone users.
As a designer working in B2B marketing, I’m always looking for new and unique tools that can take my projects to the next level. Below are five Wordpress Plugins that I found that can help enhance blogs.
1. HeadSpace2 SEO: Wordpress SEO made simple. With this amazing all-in-one meta-data manager, you can fine-tune the SEO potential of your blog, including configuration of meta-data for posts, pages, categories, setting tags/keywords, descriptions and page titles.
2. WPtouch iPhone Theme: Customize many aspects of your blog’s appearance and turn it into a stylish smartphone Web site that visitors can view on their iPhone, Android, Opera Mini, Palm Pre or Blackberry.
3. Thank Me Later: Automatically e-mail anyone who comments on your blog. Or, you can set it up to send a message to all first-time visitors welcoming them and reminding them to sign up for the RSS feed. It also lets you send messages after a pre-defined amount of time, making them appear more unique.
4. Wordpress Related Posts: Generate related posts and add them to the feed. Once a visitor reads your post, they can read other suggested posts and keep clicking through your blog.
5. Polldaddy: Create polls that can easily be embedded into your posts, pages or sidebar via the widgets panel. There’s also a cool reports section in your WP control panel that displays results.
Have you used any of these Plugins? Do you use other Plugins to add features to your blog?
Recently, I stumbled upon a new site that is still in beta testing called Readernaut by Nathan Borror. Readernaut makes the process of reading a little more interesting and fun!
The site is very easy to use. You sign up, create your profile, search for books and buy them directly online using Amazon, Google Books or BookMooch. They have books available in all topics including B2B marketing, design and leisure books.
Readernaut also allows you to create a list of books you are planning on buying and keeps track of the books you are currently reading. Then, Readernaut keeps up with how far into the book you are, and it allows you to rate books, record notes and share thoughts with others. But, I think the best feature of this site is the ability to follow other readers and see what they are reading. It’s a great way to get inspired. How neat is that?
And, as a designer, I must say the interface was designed beautifully. So go ahead and check it out for yourself here. If you are a book lover, this site was designed for you.
If you are new to the site and are looking for friends to connect with, make sure to find me at http://readernaut.com/renata.
